SUMMARY:סמינר אורח: פרופ' בועז ברק
DESCRIPTION:Myelination beyond development: glial contributions to brain dy
sfunction\n ** Lecture will be given in English**\nAbstract:\nMyelination
is a fundamental biological process that enables efficient signal transmi
ssion in the nervous system and supports coordinated brain activity and be
havior. Accumulating evidence suggests that myelination is dynamically reg
ulated and vulnerable across neurodevelopmental disorders. In this talk\,
I will present work from our lab examining how genetic perturbations linke
d to Williams syndrome and autism spectrum disorders disrupt myelinating g
lial cells and white matter integrity\, with consequences for neural funct
ion and behavior. Using cell type-specific genetic mouse models\, human iP
 SC-derived glial cells\, and multi-scale molecular\, cellular\, and physio
logical approaches\, we uncover unexpected roles for disease-associated ge
nes in oligodendrocytes and their precursors. Our findings demonstrate tha
t altered gene function in myelinating cells can impair axonal conductivit
y\, network synchronization\, and behavior\, while targeted modulation of
myelination can partially rescue these deficits. Together\, these studies
highlight oligodendrocytes as active contributors to neurodevelopmental pa
thology and identify myelination as a potential therapeutic entry point ac
ross disorders with distinct genetic origins.
