In January, the annual conference of the Israeli Polymer and Plastics Society (IPPS 2026), took place – covering polymers and plastics,
including edible polymers, polymers for medicine, and energy applications. This year, the faculty had a broad and impressive presence,
with six researchers participating and a poster that won second place!
Two faculty members, Prof. Yoav Livney and Assoc. Prof. Boaz Mizrahi, gave talks on cutting-edge topics. Prof. Livney presented research on 3D printing of a “salmon steak” made from algae-based alternative protein as a fish substitute, as part of an innovative approach
to sustainable food from the sea. Assoc. Prof. Mizrahi discussed the use of living materials as tools for drug delivery.
In addition, four graduate students from the faculty presented posters. PhD student Shaked Katzelnick, from the lab of Prof. Dganit Danino, won second place for her poster, which presented research on protein self-assembly processes leading to supramolecular structures, characterized using advanced electron microscopy methods that enable high-resolution three-dimensional structural determination.
MSc student Neta Segal, from the lab of Prof. Yoav Livney, presented her research on upcycling agricultural side streams and developing an innovative process for breaking down cellulose from in plant waste such as corn plants, into simple sugars, followed by yeast cultivation on this sugar-rich substrate
to produce an excellent raw material for nutritious and tasty alternatives to animal-based foods.
PhD student Jingjing Zhao, from the lab of Prof. Dganit Danino, presented her research on the Characterization of an Amylopectin Cluster-like Dextrin Structure in the Enzymatic Hydrolysis of Waxy Rice Starch.
MSc student Gali Cohen, from the lab of Assoc. Prof. Boaz Mizrahi, presented her research on a bilayer microneedle patch with dual drug
loading for comprehensive skin treatment.
Congratulations to all conference participants. We are confident that you represented the innovation taking place in our department in the best possible way ๐๐ป๐๐ป
