The Faculty Mourns the Passing of Professor Emeritus Uri Kogan

19 January 2025

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Professor Emeritus Uri Kogan. We would like to share the eulogy delivered yesterday by Professor Yoav Livney on behalf of the faculty:

“My name is Yoav Livney, and I speak these words on behalf of myself and the Faculty of Biotechnology and Food Engineering at the Technion.
Uri was my PhD advisor, and through his guidance, I developed a passion for protein research, particularly milk proteins.
Born in Jerusalem in 1938, Uri graduated from the Technion with a degree in Chemical Engineering, followed by a master’s degree in Food Engineering and Biotechnology. He then completed his doctorate and post-doctoral studies at the University of Illinois, where he also spent two years working at Procter & Gamble.

Uri joined our faculty in 1972. Throughout his career, he conducted groundbreaking research in food chemistry and biochemistry, publishing over 100 papers and mentoring approximately 35 graduate students. He held visiting professorships at Columbia University in New York and the University of California, Davis. Beyond his scientific achievements, Uri made invaluable contributions to faculty leadership, serving as Dean from 1992-1994 and again from 1999-2001. During his tenure, he worked tirelessly to recruit talented faculty members and strengthen our academic community.

As the holder of the Bernice and Joseph Tannenbaum Chair in Preventive Medicine, Uri established the Kogan Fund to support graduate students’ participation in international conferences. However, what truly set him apart was his exceptional character. He was wise, approachable, and empathetic, always generous with his time and support. For both students and colleagues, he embodied the ideal of excellence in both scholarship and character, serving as an inspiration to me and countless others.”

Professor Emeritus Benzi Levi remembered Uri as “a cherished colleague, deeply devoted to the faculty, with a delightful manner and remarkable wit and knowledge.”

Professor Marcel Machluf shared: “Uri Kogan was, above all, a warm and supportive individual. As the Dean who recruited me, he holds a special place in my heart. His encouragement and support throughout my journey to tenure were unwavering, and he remained a dear friend even after his retirement.”

Professor Sima Yaron, the outgoing Dean, reflected: “Uri guided me through every crucial stage of my professional development, from my undergraduate food chemistry course to my appointment as a faculty member. He was a compassionate and beloved mentor, both professional and paternal in his guidance. His absence will be deeply felt.
